MOUSER
(Tasty World) Colby Carter (vocals, guitar) and his expanding gang of backing musicians play efficient and exuberant garage-pop songs that suggest a willingness to experiment, all in the name of entertainment (either theirs or the audience’s). Winner of the 2006 Flagpole Athens Music Award for Best Experimental Band Part of tonight's "Food Not Bombs" benefit show upstairs; more details on p. 45.
“OPEN MIC NIGHT”
(DT’s) Every Tuesday.
THE PHYSICS OF MEANING
(Caledonia) North Carolina’s The Physics of Meaning represents the musical collaboration between songwriter Daniel Hart (The Polyphonic Spree, Ester Drang) and producer Alex Lazara (the prayers and tears of arthur digby sellers). The live act, comprised of a rotating cast of musicians, brings string trios, guitar, drums and laptop beats to the stage, fusing sounds and drawing comparisons to John Vanderslice and The Flaming Lips.
RASTA BLANCA
(J.R.'s Baitshack) Reggae covers and originals. Every Tuesday.
696
(Tasty World) This Athens four-piece band - David, Bryan, Kevin and Brad - plays with old-school California punk sounds in mind, "like a bat coming straight out of hell." Part of tonight's "Food Not Bombs" benefit show upstairs; more details on p. 45.
THE SOCIETY OF PROBABLE MONSTERS
(Tasty World) Part of tonight's "Food Not Bombs" benefit show upstairs; more details on p. 45.
STEREO CAMPBELL
(Caledonia) Claire and Page Campbell, both of Hope For Agoldensummer and Dark Meat, perform as a duo tonight. “We will be performing songs mainly about former or current lovers,” says Claire. “And also will kick out some Top 40 R&B slow jams from past and present.” Expect Hope songs and the sisters' other songs, a lot of folk-blues, some gospel and charming handclap percussion.
SWEET JUSTICE
(Tasty World) No information available.
“TUESDAY NIGHT JAZZ”
(Farm 255) Every Tuesday, 7–10 p.m., the downtown restaurant features jazz from a revolving cast of regulars.
WOLFSKIN
(Tasty World) Part of tonight's "Food Not Bombs" benefit show upstairs; more details on p. 45.
Wednesday, Nov. 8
BRIAN CONNELL
(Eastwood Pub) Brian Connell and his band The Dickens - Cheslie Lowe on banjo, Jon Evans on guitar, Rich Mullinax on bass, Hal Misseri on mandolin, Leah Calvert on fiddle - perform intriguing alt-country originals, but tonight's a solo show at the Eastside pub. Connell's been hard at work on some recordings, so ask to hear some new tunes.
CRUMBLING ARCHES
(Tasty World) Theatrical, over-the-top melodic rock from Atlanta's four-piece Crumbling Arches. Best feature? A capable rhythm section makes up for predictable "rock" vocals. Full-length album out soon.
DARK MEAT
(40 Watt) Local all-star rock sensation with former and current members of Disband, Col. Knowledge, Hope For Agoldensummer, Carrie Nations and other groups. “Experimental” rock with both Neil Young’s sprawl and punk’s efficiency, and explosive, fun sounds. Horn section called the Vomit Lasers. Backup singing and choreographed dance moves courtesy of The Subtweeters. Costumes. Face paint. More. Although the national release date for the debut album Universal Indians has been pushed back to later this month, the album is available locally.
THE FUTURISTS
(Tasty World) Fast-paced, anthemic and rhythmic indie rock from the new Atlanta four-piece of John Lindsey (vocals, guitar), Matt McDaniel (bass), Matt DeBusschere (drums) and Alan Poole (guitar). Axis and Allies is last year's debut EP.
THE GINGER ENVELOPE
(40 Watt) Patrick Carey’s slow-rolling countryish pop is marked by breezy, melodic sounds with chiming acoustic and electric sounds and vocal melodies, rounded out by Jason Robira, Stephen Miller, Matt Stoessel and Jason Trahan. The band has recently wrapped work on its full-length album Edible Orchids, to be released next year.
HAM 1
(40 Watt) Guitarist Jim Willingham (The Gerbils, Harry Carey, Crown Vic) handles the frontman stuff, while Eric Harris (drums), Jacob Morris (cello), Chris Sugiuchi (trombone) and others join in. Exuberant, quirky and jolly, Willingham is a well of creativity and his folk-pop eccentricities always surprise. Ham 1 is last year’s excellent debut album, and Willingham & Co. have been at work on some new stuff for an upcoming album called The Captain's Table.
THE HONORED GUESTS
(Tasty World) Tastes Change is the aptly titled second album from these Chapel Hill rockers, as it delves more into lush but nuanced atmospherics and cleaner sounds than the debut album Iawokeinacityasleep. Slightly reminiscent of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, kinda.
“KARAOKE”
(Foxz) Every Wednesday.
“KARAOKE”
(Mell’s) Every Wednesday.
“KARAOKE”
(Stan’s Bar & Grill) Every Wednesday.
KENOSHA KID
(Flicker) Kenosha Kid performs in its "Euro-trio" incarnation, with Dan Nettles on guitar, Roland Fidezius on bass and Robbie Michler on drums. It's the first gig in a week full of 'em, and Nettles says it may be the "more experimental" of the bunch, with film projection a possibility. 8:30 p.m.
MISFORTUNE 500
(Tasty World) Hook-heavy, mid-tempo local rock with a strong melodic backing and an enthusiastic stage show. Self-titled debut EP out now.
“OPEN JAM”
(DT’s) This is a new thing the club’s trying out; you just bring your instrument and join in. For more information, call 706-208-1474.
"OPEN MIC NIGHT"
(Stan’s Bar & Grill) Every Wednesday, 8 p.m.
PERPETUAL GROOVE
(Georgia Theatre) This Savannahian group’s been stirring crowds into a frenzy around the Southeast with its high-energy jams and spirited cover tunes. For New Year’s they swung through town for a three-night stand, and they liked it so much (and have built up a decent crowd in town over the years) that they moved here a couple months back. All This Everything and Sweet Oblivious Antidote are the most recent albums, and there's another one coming up next year. Tonight's show falls under the "Friends of the Theatre" banner, as it's a fundraiser for renovations to the historic venue. See more in next week's paper.
PRIME TIME JAZZ
(Porterhouse) Drummer Tony McCutchen, bassist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim McKillip perform jazz standards for the dinner-and-a-drink set every Wednesday.
SUMMER HYMNS
(Georgia Theatre) Zachary Gresham, Philip Brown, Chris Riser and Bryan Nuse play psychedelic-tinged Neil Young-y pop-rock that hinges more on simple chord progressions and vocal melodies, and if you’re a fan of the Flaming Lips you’ll find much to like about ’em as well. The new album Backward Masks is out later this month. Tonight's show falls under the "Friends of the Theatre" banner, as it's a fundraiser for renovations to the historic venue.
TWIN POWERS
(Go Bar) Danceable New Wave and Britpop tunes. 10 p.m., every Wednesday.
"UNCORKED & UNPLUGGED"
(Melting Point) Every week local singer-songwriter Ken Will Morton opens and hosts this new series, which aims to focus on artists proficient in the craft of songwriting. This week: Athens musician Daniel Hutchens, the Bloodkin guy whose new album is Love Songs for Losers, performs, as does Winfield Smith, one half of the country-rock outfit Stewart & Winfield. Every Wednesday, 9 p.m.
