The Athens Music Scene

So Athens has a rep as a music town, right? There's got to be more than just a storied past, though, and there is - our town's come a long way since it first got attention in the early '80s, and where once there was a small scene of art-school kids playing shows at house parties, there now exists a busy town with live music venues on (almost) every block. Be prepared for late nights, as the opening bands at most Athens shows start around 10 p.m., but give local music a try and you're bound to find something that suits your tastes.

In much the same way that local restaurants and cafés double as art display venues, many of the same establishments also showcase live music or deejays. The following spaces - either geared towards serving you drinks, food or coffee or otherwise not primarily existing as a music venue - feature music at least somewhat regularly.

Weekly show listings are available in the "A is Playing at B on C" music calendar in Flagpole Magazine and online at www.flagpole.com. Check often, as live music pops up in even more places throughout the year.
